Com Port Issue

I'm a school teacher using Fedora 10 exlusively for about 3 years now. I have been running a program (FA124) that allows the computer to link to a Casio calculator via the com port (COM1). FA124 is running under Wine, and it's worked fine.

I had to reinstall F10 recently at school (just wanted a bigger drive)--now FA124 says "can't open com port."

Funny thing is, root has no problem! Program works fine. So, I think it's a permissions issue. Oddly, F10 at home has no problem with me as a regular user. I've compared directories on both machines--they seem identical.

I've googled a it with little luck. Where can look on my system to investigate this?

BTW, when I run FA124 in a terminal -- there's no error/feedback from the window when it can't initialize the com port! None.

Okay==that's the issue: any ideas?

Ken

add your user to the group that owns the /dev/ttySx files, typically its dialout

That's a good idea; I should have thought of group permissions!

But I don't have a "dialout" group; I have a "tty" group. But on the machine that works, I'm only a member of my own group--and no other as far as I can tell. (I did tell Fedora to unhide the system groups.)
