Hi majinmunkee, welcome to lq. Which driver did you download? Where did you download it from? What is the filename? If it's a *.tar.gz file have you extracted it? If you have extracted it is there a readme? Maybe more importantly, if it's detected, and you're getting errors, could you post some specific errors?
good luck. |
the name of the file is cmpci-5.68.tar.gz
i downloaded it from cmedia.com.tw in their download section, the newest ones for linux. i tried extracting to a directory i made, but there were no files after several attempted extractions. i tried downloading again and no luck. ack!! |
Before we get to ahead of ourselves, please post the output from the following commands, if you don't understand that, open konsole, or double click it, or single click it, whatever you need to do to get to a terminal. Once that's done type the following commands in and post the output here.
/sbin/lspci -v lsmod Just so you're informed, I'm looking for hardware info, and modules loaded, or drivers loaded. It may be a simple matter of running a mixer and unmuting sound. It also may be a more complicated issue of installing some drivers, or loading modules, then configuring the card. If it turns out that your modules are not loaded, then we'll set to the task of installing the files you've downloaded. good luck. |
i can't seem to find "konsole". but i do have "run command". when i enter those two commands into the "run command", nothing happens. i hope i'm doing it right. and believe me this help is GREATLY appreciated. :-)

i still can't figure this out! i hope you can help me.
|
does the sound work if you open a konsole (as root) and type 'modprobe snd-cmipci'
you dont' need to install your cmedia drivers if this method works. (it's an 'alsa' sound driver for the cmi8738 which is the exact same onboard sound i have) |
WOW thank you db, very very much. works fine now! :-D thanks for all everyone's help.
