Question Cinnamon no hardware acceleration on Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 Series

Hi everyone! I've installed Linux Mint 17.2 with cinnamon on my netbook and I get a message saying that "Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration [..] There could be a problem with your driver or some other issue.". The environment runs with low fps too. My netbook has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 Series. The CPU is Intel(R) Atom(TM) n2600.

Where can I download drivers for those?

Thanks!

intel.com

But you should have drivers in your distros package management system.

xserver-xorg-video-intel
intel-gpu-tools
libgl1-mesa-glx
vdpau-va-driver
libva-glx1

And probably others. You'll have to restart X once those are installed. Or just reboot.

$ glxinfo | more

Direct rendering should be YES. The user needs to be in the video group for this to apply to non-root users.

$ glxgears -info

Sometimes useful to tell if things appear accelerated. Other options like glmark2 and such are more benchmark-ish in nature. I tend to run armagetronad the game and if it's choppy or plain / ugly, then accelleration is likely not in play.

Juan Lucas,

Welcome to LQ.

Post #7 gives some background info on the GMA 3600:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2211217

You will find that if you install either Linux Mint 17.2 MATE or Xfce then your problem is solved.

The Intel GMA 3600 GPU is actually a relabeled PowerVR SGX545 GPU, Intel has just licensed its design and uses it in the Atom D/N2xxx CPUs. Imagination Technologies, the company that designed these GPUs is not interested in providing proper Linux drivers for these GPUs and their design (the "driver" is basically an OS in itself running on the GPU, if I understand it correctly) makes it very hard to reverse engineer the drivers. For that reason you won't get proper 3D acceleration with this GPU in Linux.

As sad as it is, for now the best solution to get this hardware running properly is to use Windows.

Unhappy Well, that is sad indeed

Do you have any suggestion about a Linux Distro and Desktop Environment that would work acceptably with it?

The mesa drivers provide software versions of the 3D graphics. It's not performant, but it should help your 3D things to function in linux.

Since sourceforge seems down atm.

AFAIK, 2D acceleration works, so anything that doesn't rely on 3D acceleration should work somewhat. Your best bet would be to go for a simple WM, like Openbox, possibly in conjunction with LXDE/LXQt, if you really need a DE. XFCE may also work, if you don't use xfwm's compositor. Which distro you choose should be irrelevant.

Thumbs up Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot to everyone for the help! I am going to try Openbox and the Mesa drivers on Mint . MATE also worked without problems.
