"Choppy" hard drive writing and more..

Hello... I am somewhat a linux newbie so try and bare with me...

I recently formatted my former Windows drive (once and for all ) and formatted it to ext3. It is a relatively new drive. However, I notice whenever I am writing to the drive, my whole system becomes "choppy" with little pauses which stops the mouse briefly as well. If I am playing music it interrupts that frequently and is very annoying. It does this no matter how I write to the drive (ie not a certain app). Writing will work, but with the aforementioned symptoms. Reading doesn't seem to do this, but even that seems slower than it should be for a 7200rpm drive... Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? Thanks.

Maybe you didn't enable DMA on the drive? What's the output of hdparm /dev/hda?

Wow thanks... that was easy.

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda worked like a charm
