Choosing a Linux Distro for Notebook, possibly good for AMD64 Dual-Core

Ok, this post contains two questions, related to this fact:I'm going to buy my first notebook (wow) and I heard about Dual-Core technology.
I'm attending university...

I read some benchmarks which say that AMD64 Dual Core is suitable for notebooks thanks to low energy cost and because it's efficient with medium-low workload, however it's somewhat more expansive than Intel's dual processors .

So here are the questions:
1)Is AMD64 Dual Core a good choice for a student's notebook?(maybe this is a silly question.... )
2)Which is the best distro for a notebook? considering AMD64 DC as well.

thanks for your attention.

Another 'What distro' thread.

Oh well, since I got here 1st, let me just say that the best distro for anyone (newbie, expert, laptop, desktop, 32-bit, 64-bit, ...everybody) is Debian. Don't pay any attention to the naysayers and proseletysers who will come along behind ... Just hie yourself off to find a Dedian netinstall disk.
