I see your points with Live CDs, but I've always felt these can do more harm than good when given to someone who has never before seen Linux unless it's clearly pointed out that these are trimmed down versions of a full installation.
Guidance is usually needed anyway. I've known IT proffessionals who couldn't access a CD if it didn't auto-run.

I managed to sell a business on GNU/Linux by demonstrating DSL... 6-second boot - and it is about the most cut down possible. OTOH: the boss in that business successfully used an Ubuntu CD on his laptop - got excited and tried it on all the spare HW he had. All successful. Now they're pretty keen. Raved about HW support (some of the HW had no current Windows drivers) and ease of use (from boot to internet in 6 mins) and the heady experience of not having to "activate" the system.

DSL and Ubuntu are complete on the CD.

I note that any strategy has the potential to do more harm than good... going from distro to distro, full versions, is also offputting. I think the main thing is to relax and use the available tools.
