Probably the best way to do this is to get an idea of what you consider a cheap video card and then check the compatibility list or search the internet and LQ for any indication of problems related to the card.

Explain cheap. Usually two generations back has support for linux. As long as you aren't trying for cutting edge you are usually o.k. All of the distros have HCL's (Hardware Compatability Lists), go to Red Hat--at the search bar type in HCL.
Just beware of bells and whistles. The chipsets may be supported but if you want video--get video, nothing else. Unless you need two monitors, tv out, and screen capture avoid such cards like the plague. (People do make them work, but it is a lot of work.)

I'm running an old ATI 3D-Rage Pro--you probably can find those in the junk drawer at any shop. I had no problems with Nvidia TNT2 M64 (PowerColor brand) on my other box. If you do no gaming or video it makes no difference how primitive your card is.

i've got an oak 256k isa video card i'll sell you for 25 cents.
i found the old card in a box when i was working at a
computer store 7 years ago. don't let this opportunity
pass you by. it's slower than the oak card that came in
my 386 i bought in 1993. i remember testing it.
i think it's 8 bit, so you don't have to have those new
fancy extra long 16 bit isa slots.

I think I spent about $20 on a cheap ati 8 mb card when I built my box. Then my son upgrades his video card and I get an nVidia 32 mb for free.
Don't you just love Linux? It sure is kind on the old pocket book when you can build a pretty decent box for around $300-400.
Make friends with a gamer and get his old stuff he usually tosses.
