changing resolution of a LCD monitor
Hi,
I have a LCD monitor with a VGA input and I was wondering if it's possible to change the resolution from 1280x1024 - 16 bits, to 1280x1024 - 24 bits. My GC is a NVidia with VGA and DVI (I also have an DVI-VGA adapter, if necessary).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
BTW, I'm using Suse 9.3.

there are at least two methods to solve this.
1: edit the /etc/X11/XF86config file
to do this the easiest thing to do is to post youir file here and then we can hopefully provide you with some pointers, guides and sample configurations.
2: Hunt arround the menus, under gnome there is a setting for scren resolution. Other than that you can go to YaST and find the Hardware section then select "Graphics card and monitor". Hunt arround the settings in there and you can change what your screen and card can do (this may be the easier option as its all graphical)

OK,
I'm posting all "xorg.conf" files that I have tried/used.
1) This one is the one that I started with, the one with 16-bit color scheme. It works fine but it doesn't used the nvidia driver nor i can change to 24-bit color scheme.

2) This one was set up by sax2 using the DVI ouput (with a DVI-VGA adapter) of the GC. It worked fine when tested with sax2 but the screen went black and the keyboard went dead after reboot.

You should be able to just change the Default Depth from 16 to 24, quit X, then restart X.
Please also post details on the exact monitor and video card you are using.

Hi, JW.
I thought that I could do just that but I can't!
My monitor is a DELL 1800FP, with the VGA input only (the DVI input is not working).
My VC is a NVidia GeForce 6800 GS, with both VGA and DVI outputs.

Have you tried swapping the monitor input over when the screen went blank?
Nvidia drivers have some issues with some configurations and swapping the monitor over to the other output fixes them.

Yeah, I've tried that already.
Thanks.
