Changing Monitor Refresh Rate??

Hi. I have had a couple of threads about my ATI driver and SuSE setup but i have since found in the Monitors manual that my problem is the refresh rate. When the driver is installed I can not receive a GUI because of the refresh rate and I can not change it via Sax2. I do change it manually in there but it will not change it. I am using SuSE 9.3. I have two questions.. How can I find out what frequency the graphics card is asking for after I install the driver?? (Keep in mind that if I install the driver I can only use init 3.) (2) How can I change the refresh rate on the monitor other than using SaX2 which does not really change it anyway? Any help is very appreciated.

Resolutions/refresh rates are configured in the X conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config, depending on X version).
