Changing from 24-bit depth to 16-bit (and vice versa) on the fly?
 

I have an Nvidia GF 9600GT video card, and am running the proprietary drivers.
The video card supports both 24-bit and 16-bit colour depth, and works with whichever I set up in xorg.conf as a DefaultDepth value.

However, I would like to switch the bit-depth "on the fly", i.e. without restarting X, just like I'm able to change the screen resolution (e.g. with xrandr).

Is this possible? If so, how, and if not, why?

Your using xrandr with the nVidia proprietary drivers?

You'd be better off using nvidia-settings IMO.

I know that you can change from 16bit to 24bit colour on the fly using nvidia-settings.

I'm not using xrandr per se, I just stated it as an example of a tool which allows me to change the screen resolution without restarting X.

I can change the bit depth with nvidia-settings, but not without restarting X. When I said "on-the-fly" I meant without restarting X. Is that possible somehow? TIA
