Changed Video card from Geforce 4 MX to Radeon X1300 Pro

Ok I expected this to happen, I just got a new video card from my sister for Christmas and I switched out my old one (nVidia Geforce 4 MX) with my new one (ATI Radeon X1300 Pro). I have SuSE 10.2 installed and I really don't want to re-install because I have a dual boot and it's a b***h to configure. Anyways When I boot up, there is no GUI I get the command line; how do I change my video card from CLI?

Try running yast as root to configure the card.

Well I used sax2 from the CLI and I got it to run at a very grainy looking 1024*768 65Hz. I went to ATI's website and I downloaded the driver from there and installed it. Now when I go into Yast, it says that it is running at 1280*1024 70Hz even though it's still the lower resolution. Well since I don't have much stuff saved on my Linux partition, I'm just going to re-install; it will take less time to do that than it would to configure my new card.

i hate to tell you, but ati's linux support is pitiful. every ati propriety driver i've used has sucked up significant CPU just to play avi (lavc) videos. nvidia's support and options for opengl are fantastic... and the nvidia control panel program makes configuring it easy as 1 2 3. ati isn't so friendly, and the end product is no where near as good under linux. in all honesty, a geforce 4 mx (which i realize is only an average desktop card) will out-do the best that ati has to offer ---- when you're working in linux that is.

Well I finally got this bloody card to work. I re-installed SuSE and it didn't help my case any. I downloaded the ATI drivers and let it do the automatic thing this time instead of the custom. I then went into Yast and changed the Monitor from ATI to LCD 1280*1024 @70Hz. I changed the display size in the next tab (Display Size) from 15.0 inches to 17.0 inches. I then consulted my monitor manual and went into Sync Frequencies and changed it to the recommended Frequencies; I then tested and saved the configuration and rebooted. I also had to run the aticonfig --initial thing but I forget what I typed in for that.
