A CF card? I think I have something like that in my 10 years old Canon camera. I don't think you can use it as a hard drive - it would be way too slow.

BTW, this thread hasn't had any replies for 13 years. Welcome to LQ!

I assume this is some incredibly old laptop or you would buy an ssd?
Do you have an operating system installed (is that hard drive that you are replacing still working, and does it have an operating system?)?
Are you using a cf to ide hd adapter or did you plug it into a reader built in the side of the laptop? If there is no option to boot from a cf reader in the side of the laptop in your bios settings you can't boot from that device and you need another device as a boot drive.
Using CF as a linux hard drive can result in a very bad cold shutdown situation, and can frequently results in a hosed operating system requiring complete reinstall after a cold shutdown. And it is slooowww.
Also if you are not using an adapter to plug it into ide port, your will probably need an intird.gz to get the built in card reader recognized during boot (if the bios allows it as a boot device).

You could try an ide to sata adapter like the one above and use an ssd instead of CF. I have no personnel experience with these ide to sata adapters, so YMMV.The ssd possibly won't fit in the laptop with the adapter in place , but in many instances if you take the ssd out of its case, it will fit. I have done this to an ssd to cram it into a chromebook that some how had a sata port but insufficient room for a standard ssd case. This worked great out for me , chromebook has worked like a champ for two years of every day use in that configuration. Of course, if you take the ssd out of the case and it does not fit, you can't return the ssd. Obviously, you should use a budget not a premium ssd, because the ide interface will cripple its transfer rate relative to using a sata interface.
I actually installed slackware on a IBM x31 Thinkpad (centrino 1 core ide) using a CF with an adapter many years ago. It was not a good solution. 90% of the time a cold shutdown resulted in a state where i needed to format and do a complete reinstall.

I have a CF to ide adapter that I wanted to use for an old 386 system in QNX.

The adapter I selected had to be stated that it can boot from the adapter. Not all can. I forget the issue.

Also you may have problems in bios.

CHS limits and ability to manually create an entry for the drive.

I'd try a much smaller CF if you have it for a test.
