Centos software raid

I have setup a CentOS server with 2 hard drives raided (RAID1 for boot and RAID10 for / and /home).

Normally when I boot the machine, it starts up and runs. When I shut down it throws up a lots of 'sync' errors (I dont have the exact messages on hand, but can provide them if you need) and when I boot it up again, it complains a lot about the state of the raid and does a lot of checkings, fixings and clearings. Am I doing anything wrong or missing something here?

As a test, I removed one of the hard drives and checked that the server starts up with one hard drive (which is what I think is the purpose of having the raid). But this fails with a 'Grub boot disk' error message (again I dont have the exact error message on hand). Is my understanding of the raid wrong? Or should this be tested differently?

Please help. Please let me know if you need more information in this regard or the exact error messages.
