cdrw won't write on dell latitude with Mandrake
I have a dell latitude laptop with a cdrw drive that I have used in the past to burn CDs. It's been awhile since I've used it for that. I can read from the drive but not write to it now. From Gnome GUI I get a "Generic Error" when it starts to copy files. From the console trying cp somefile /mnt/cdrom/somefile I get "no medium found". So apparently it knows it is cdrw but thinks there is no disk present. I have tried both write only disks and rw disks to the same effect.

You can not drag and drop or just copy files to a CDRW to burn like W2K or XP. You need to use an application like k3b or xcdrecord.
