CD ROM problem in Mandrake

I've just got a new Mandrake 9.2 box. Everything is straight out of the box so I haven't had the learning curve of installing everything. This is very much a newbie question.

I inserted a data cd into the cd rom drive and there seemed to be some trouble reading it. The whole system slowed down a lot and the cd couldn't be read. I tried to shut down the system (which took a long time).

X closed down and there were a string of messages displayed all looking like:

Warning: Symbol map for key <X> redefined
Using last definition for conflicting fields

Where X changes. Some examples; AC01 - AC11, etc, AB01 to AB10, LFSH, BKSL, LCTL, SPCE.

The first time I shut down the system error messages appeared apparently interupting the shut down process, the second time I shut down there were none of these error messages. I can't remember what they were.

The problem only seems to occur with one cd in particlular (a RW disk with jpegs on it), other cds don't cause this. Could this be a problem with the cd? If so why is it causing the system to grind to all but a halt?

I've tried searching around for a solution but I haven't found anything relevant. Any ideas?
