CD rom packs up after 'base system missing'

I have just puchased a 3 disc set of mandrake 9.2 from ebay. I am a bit of a newbie by the way. I tried to install on to a P3 450mhz PC. All went well up to disc partitioning. Managed to set up partitions with expert mode, i.e linux native and swap, both formatted. After this installation started, after about 3 mins a meesage appeared saying there was 'no base system', after which my cd drive stopped and has not worked since. Even after removing drive from computer and trying a different power source, there is no life whatsoever. This has happened twice!! Can't afford any more cd drives! Help!! I'm scared stiff of Mandrake 9.2 at the moment.

Yikes! Do you have another drive you can try? I've had a lot of CD-Rom drives kick the bucket on me, but never while I was in the middle of using them It might also be something simpler like a wiring problem; if you're comfortable messing with your hardware, try switching the CD drive to a different IDE cable or something.

Does your computer's BIOS detect the drive?

Thanks for the reply, bios does not detect drive. Even tried Windows98( sorry for swearing!) start up disc, it says 'no drives found'. When I replaced the cd drive, it was recognized immediately. Unfortunately when i tried to install mandrake 9.2, it did it again!!! I have since replaced that cd rom drive, again it was recognized instantly. HAVE NOT tried to install mandrake 9.2 since!!! Anyone any idea what is going on???
