Question CD ROM not working after install RH 9

Right after I installed RH 9 and did all of the necessary updates, my CDROM stopped working.

The system recognizes it SONY CRX175A1 burner, but when I attempt to access it tells me "Drive Error".

Now I am VERY new to Linux and have no idea where to start. I did notice on boot that it found the drive but then said something to the effect "fstat error /dev/cdrom doesn't exist" ... it scrolled to fast to catch it.

Can anyone provide any guidance as to where I can start. This is very frustrating since I am attempting to install software and have no access to the CD.

Thanks and I appreciate your patience.

Joe

Here it is ....

cat /etc/fstab
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

ls -alc /dev/cdrom*
ls: /dev/cdrom*: No such file or directory

The last one looks bad....

Any help is greatly appreciated.

it seem to mee that your linux doesn't recognize your cdrom device correctly. Try to download a linux cdrom driver for your cdrom and install it.you should be able to get the driver from your cdrom manefacturing website.

Check for errors with the console command
dmesg

Hmm. no link to the real device. I am wondering if RH automatically configured the burner for SCSI emulation. dmesg should indicate the fact.

Do you have a /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0?
