CD-ROM (Enable Digital Playback)
Okay... First off I have sound. I can play mp3's and I have system sounds.
My hard drive died last week and pissed me off enough to finally make the total switch to Linux (Mandrake 10.1). Prior to installing linux I had playback of audio CDs through the CD-ROM in Windoze. There is no cable going from the CD-ROM to the sound card. In Windoze (Device Manager) when you look at the CD-ROM properties there is an option to check called "Enable Digital Playback". I assume that this is what routes the signal appropriately in the Windoze world, thus creating the audio signal from the CD-ROM? What is the comparable thing I need to do in linux in order to get this to work? Thanks! |
You've got me there. I'm using the audio cable between the drive and the mboard in my pooter. I tried digital playback in windoze and it kept locking up... Does DMA need to be enabled for this to work? Anyone?

AFAIK there isn't a comparable"properties" audio setting. You need to use a player that is capable of using digital audio extraction. xmms is one such player.

If you ask me, the simplest way to solve this issue would be to just go to your local PC store and buy one of those small cables. -- J.W.

XMMS, if configured properly.
Xine, when you click the "CD" button. |

Well, my point was simply that installing that audio cable is not only a trivial fix but is also a universal solution (meaning that it works for all sound apps). Sure, some sound apps may have the ability to bypass that cable, but it just seems to me to make sense to consider fixing the problem by installing the cable. It's just a suggestion. -- J.W.

Of course it makes sense, and it can be a solution as well, but your post seemed to me that doing it by enabling digital extraction was something difficult to get, while it's not.
I hope I missuderstood your post. |
Hammett... Thanks for the post. That fixed the "opportunity" I was having.
Like I always say... "If you can do it in Windows. Its already been done in Linux!" Thanks again! Januismer |
Hammett -- I was only suggesting that replacing the wire might be a viable solution to consider, nothing more. If you interpreted my comment as being negative or critical towards other approaches, that simply was not my intent. Sorry for any possible confusion. -- J.W.
