cd players and dropouts

I've been using the Gnome CD Player (1.2.3) and notice an annoying number of dropouts. Considering I wasn't doing much at the time but some text editing, it seems unreasonable. Is this characteristic of the Gnome player? Is there a better one? Or is there maybe something else going on here?

The system is new - 1.2 GHz processor, plenty of ram, etc., seems like that shouldn't be the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.
