CD player reads disc no sound

RH Linux enterprise distro, default CD player reads the music CD identifies title and tracks(song titles)
but will not play the CD. Sound check works and is successful. hardware is a DVD/CD player

is this an issue with which device it is pointing to? /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd

dvd/cd (samsung i think), no soundcard(integrated in motherboard)

thanks,
harold

Is there an option to enable digital audio extraction in your player?

not that i can see, options are very basic you can change the path of the device for ex: /dev/cdrom vs /dev/dvd
which i have tried and w/no success. the RH default player is displaying
a msg "disk error".(have tried a couple of music CD and the same error msg) ejection of CD works though. these are store-bought CD's that play for example in the Windows media player.

thanks,
harold

do you have "autofs" installed ? And/or turned on or off in the services ?
on my CentOS 5.3 "Gnome-cd" ( the default ) sees both my cd drive and the cd/dvd drive
in the preferences for gnome-cd the name of the dvd/cd drive is listed ( the manufacture and type)and not the mount point

it might not be /dev/dvdrw but something else .
for example on fedora the dvd/cd drive is /dev/sr0
and the cd drive is /dev/sr1

recent computers (last five years) lack the CD Audio cable from the cd drive to the soundcard / motherboard. And many soundcards / motherboards lack the cd audio input jumpers. Although there's some high definition audio connection that's incompatible with most things. For this reason you'll likely need to use some form of digital audio extraction to bridge the gap between drive and soundcard. It might be as simple as installing libcdread and/or others. Or it can get a bit more complex depending on what you're using to play the cd.

Factor in that the cd drive has it's own mixer channel for most soundcards. It might be muted / low. And permissions to both the cdrom and audio group for the user (/etc/group). And other issues / quirks. My 1st guess would be digital extraction. My 2nd guess would be permissions. My 3rd guess would be soundcard levels.
