is this the Microsoft Windows ONLY "driver" cd from a hardware manufacture

Linux normally has most already installed

if it is a MS only auto install and autorun cd
it will not auto run on a linux OS

But you should be able to read the contents of the cd

What is on the cd ?
is it blank or a music cd ?

what is the Linux Operating system that is on this laptop ?
and it's version ?

I would say the drive itself is broken.

Sometimes the drive does not like the media/cd/dvd that is inserted.

I ran into this on a brand new Samsung laptop while doing the normal 4 dvd disk recovery backup. Sony disks were spit out. Some Memorix also. You just have to try different cds sometimes to rule out

Though it could be in this case

From the age of the unit. michaelk is correct.

Hi,

Very possible a hardware issue. I would use some dry air to blow dust out of the drive first. Depends on drive use. Could be a tray sensor, most use optic sensor instead of the older switch type on earlier drives.

Also possible that the Eject button is stuck or short circuited, I would check that also.

Hi,

System that old then my money is on mechanical switches. Replace the drive so you can extend the system service. :)
