CD Burning Problems
 

Whenever I am to burn a CD at 52X, the speeds jump randomly and the CD turns into a coaster. If I burn a Data CD it works fine. 52X with no jumping around and the CD turns out perfect. If I am to burn an audio CD or an Image file it jumps around once again. I have no idea where to even start on fixing this problem. I've looked around a lot. Tried many different methods in figuring this one out.

Make sure your CD Burner isn't being shaken or anything, that can mess it up. Make sure it's still and on a flat surface while burning. Do the CDRs allow you top burn at 52X? Try burning them at a lower speed. What programme are you using to burn? Is there a more recent version of that programme? (If so, try downloading and installing that) What type of CD burner are you using? What type of CDs are you using?

Burning at 52X will always have a chance of making coasters. Its best to record much slower like 4X or 8X. Use the burn proof option and increase the FIFO buffer for cdrecord. You can optimize your IDE controller and hard drive by using setpci and hdparm. You can use hdparm for your CD-RW but you have to use the IDE device of your drive.

IMO, people that are burning at very high speeds are impatient.

Ebel, the GUI programs that is used in LINUX to make CD or DVD are frontends for cdrecord.

I have a Lite-On Internel CD Burner. I don't know the model number but the speeds are 52X24X52. The thing is, it should burn at 52X on everything. When I burn a music or a image file, it makes the system almost unusable. If I am to burn at 52X on music or image files, they are coasters, 100% of the time, while if I am to burn at 24X they work 100% of the time even though the system is still unusable. And then this is was boggles my mind. If I am to burn a DATA CD, it burns at 52X perfect everytime and the system is usuable, nothing is slowed down. The burnproof option has always been on. And yes Ebel, every GUI program is a just a frontend for cdrecord.

Depends on your term everything. cdrecord is being developed and perfected. If you want to burn at 52X speeds, increase the FIFO buffer size to 8 megabytes or 16 megabytes, enable DMA on the CD-R/W drive, use ReiserFS or XFS, re-format hard drive partition using a bigger block size (something around 16K to 32K), use different brands of CDs, make sure the CDs can handle 52X or faster.

I suggest staying at 24X because burning at high speeds like 52X the reliability of the disc in other drives may not be read or will have errors on every other file. Slower burning speeds increases reliability like 8X, 4X, 2X, or even 1X.

I do not know why you are in a rush making CDs.

I agree with Electro. Due to the fact that burning is a one-time cost, whether it takes 1-2 minutes vs 4-5 minutes per CD is IMO pretty much of an non-issue, Also, I think it's safe to say that the burning speeds that are advertised by the manufacturers are usually, shall we say, a bit on the "optimistic" side. Perhaps under ideal conditions in a lab it may be possible to achieve those speeds, but in the real world it's less likely, and I'm not sure there are really any corrective steps you can take to make things run flawlessly at 52X. I agree that increasing the buffer may be helpful, but I can definitely say that by burning at a lower speed, your chances of success will rise dramatically. Good luck with it in any event. -- J.W.
