cd and dvd drive not recognized by FC3/KDE

I'm a Linux noob so please bear with me...

I installed FC3 with KDE. Once everything was done, there was an icon that had CD/DVD-ROM and that was it. I have a CD-ROM Drive in slot 0 and a CD-ROM in slot 1 (according to my BIOS) but they are actually a DVD Drive and a CD-RW Drive. I tried the little bit that I know and have no clue what I'm doing.

This is my lspci:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset Host Bridge (MCH) (rev 04)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 04)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 04)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82801BA ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 04)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801BA IDE U100 (rev 04)
00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #1) (rev 04)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM SMBus (rev 04)
00:1f.4 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #2) (rev 04)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400](rev b2)
02:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
02:07.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 07)
02:08.0 Communication controller: Conexant HSF 56k Data/Fax/Voice/Spkp Modem (rev 01)
02:09.0 Ethernet controller: Davicom Semiconductor, Inc. 21x4x DEC-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet (rev 31)

I don't even know where to start...

hi,

ide devices are on an ide bus, not on the pci bus, so lspci isn't going to help you here. that's assuming it is an ide device of course... presumably by slot 0 and slot 1 you mean secondary master and secondary slave, in which case they will be accessible via /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd respectively. to make sure they're recognised, try running "dmesg | grep hdc" to see any reference to the sec master etc...

ok, I ran dmesg | grep hdc as root and got this:

ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hdc: _NEC DV-5800A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache, UDMA(33)

so I assume that this means they are recognized. After this I typed "/dev/hdc" and "/dev/hdd" and got "-bash: /dev/hdc: Permission denied" for both. I don't know if that is right or not, but that seemed to be the command thrown around the most in the search results I got.

I tried looking for some sort of a tutorial to get things working but all I seem to get on www.google.com/linux is how to rip dvds. Is there something on LQ that I didn't see in the tutorials?
