card reader not recognized at all?

just got an el cheapo (but pretty cool) mmc/sd card reader/usb memory stick. it works great on my ubuntu system, but i can't get it working on my debian/fluxbox laptop running a custom 2.6.14 kernel; i thought it might be something in the compile, but it doesn't work on a vanilla 2.6.15 kernel either.
when i plug it in, the lights go on, but i have no dmesg output, and lsusb shows nothing.
i have uhci/ohci-hcd, usb-storage, scsi-mod, and usbcore modules loaded.
other usb devices (printer/scanner, also i believe using scsi, wifi card) are recognized and work without problem. i'm sure i'm missing something simple here, but i'll be damned if i can figure it out. all of my search results assume that i have some dmesg output or that the usb system isn't configured. any thoughts?

Make sure you have sd_mod loaded too.

I needed to install the "sg3-utils" package, and use sg_scan to make mine show up. I'm not at that machine right now, or else I'd provide more details.
