Can't Save Sound Hardware Settings on Linux Mint 17

Using Mint 17 Mate 64-bit desktop.

This is a problem I've run into on every Mint I've used since Mint 9 on multiple systems. Sound settings in Sound Preferences always default to the onboard sound device. Sometimes I am able to switch to my headphone and have the settings stick for awhile. But inevitably, sound reverts to the onboard sound device. And then less often I run into the current situation, where I cannot save the sound settings and only have sound using Test Speakers.

What I'd like is for my headphones always to be selected as the hardward device.

Any fix for this issue?

Thanks in advance.

You can use alsamixer.
