Have a look here to see if you actually have a usable modem:

http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

Perhaps you could post the output of lspci -v (if it says: "-bash: lspci: command not found" or something similar try typing /sbin/lspci -v ) here to give us a clue as to the make/model of modem you have.

Cheers
Amos

Here is the output of lspci -v (not all of it just the part concerning the modem features):

Communication controller: Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem (rev 08)
Subsystem: GVC Corporation Dell Silver
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 17
Memory at fe1f0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
I/O ports at ecf8 [size=8]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

Xp in the device manager told me that i had a dell data fax modem but the lspci output of knoppix tells me tha it is a Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax Modem. Why the two output dont agree? my guess is that linux output is the most right

Well then, do we have a driver for my Conexant hcf modem?

Thanks you and a happy new year to everyone!

To double check what chipset its using use you could try scanmodem from linmodems.org

http://www.linmodems.org/

There's links there to Connexant aswell..
