Cant get the right NIC for Mepis?

I installed Mepis on a AMD64 platform and all went
well but the board was carrying both onboard LAN and
sound. There was no spupport for either of them and
I really wasnt all that surprised about it (typical thing).
However I did this in school and I used a Realtek NIC to
get everything in order as far as the network, but the
NIC belonged to the school so unfortunately I couldnt keep it. Since I've brought the box home I have tried a card from
3Com and it still didnt work. I cant afford to keep buying
all these NIC's. Somebody tell me one that they know for
sure will do the job! Please

For $5.00, or less, you can pick up RTL 8139 cards all day long on http://www.eBay.com. RTL 8139 is a chipset made by Realtek, which is probably the most used chipset for NIC's. Most 3com cards will work. You must have just made a mistake and got a rare 3com card that doesn't work. The Netgear FA311 will work. That's the manufacturer and chipset.
