Cant get a record player working with Ubuntu

Hey!

There is a bunch of old records that have been running in our family for three generations now. For years now Ive thought of digitalizing them and finally got to it beginning of this year, however now having the gear for it, I cant get the pc and turntable to connect. Ive been trying to connect a pioneer plx-500 record player to my Fujitsu E559 running the latest Ubuntu 22.04.1.

Theres no signal on the pc that the turntable is connected. LSUSB is not even listing the device, but the records play. I tried connecting the device to a win PC at work, and its detected. In addition, other USB-devices work on the Fujitsu USB port so Im pretty sure its a driver issue. Im running short of ideas here. Anyone got anything to try? Thanks alot

Hello, xnajas & welcome to LQ.

Record Players have been with us since the 1920s or even earlier. I never saw one fitted with a usb socket and you'd better detail that.

I thought the lead-in noise was an attractive feature of vinyl. What stops you just getting the needle output and feeding it directly into a soundcard microphone socket? The sound levels (~200mV)should be identical - take that from a technician. If you're using a magnetic cartridge on the record player(~50mV), it will need amplification all right.

If usb doesn't seem to work you can connect turntable output (earphone socket) to pc's line in and use audacity to record the output.
I've done that in the past. That assumes it's not just a turntable and has an amplifier (a proper record player in fact!).
