I sense much confusion in the force with you

OPL3-SA
ES1668
i8x0
SB16

are all different modules for different soundcards.

Code:
lspci | grep audio
will spit out what the card is actually reporting.

Sarge should have set up up automatically....maybe worth checking the mixer is unmuted and the speakers are plugged in/turned up.

In the event that you have something nasty from Gateway or Dell then maybe the easiest solution would be to install a cheap and massively superior Creative SoundBlaster on a spare PCI.

you are not alone with this trouble.

look here

You have an NForce chipset that ofetn runs an i810 sound module but really should run the nvidia nforce driver available FOC from nvidia

There is also the OS forcedeth module that works just as well.

So either NForce OR i810 OR Forcedeth

read the instructions and remember to install outside of of X and as root. You will need to reinstall it if you ever upgrade your kernel...don't worry, it is very easy so long as you read their short instructions.

thanks..im getting someware now but,

No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means
that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.
ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
ERROR: Installation of the network driver has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-nforce-installer.log' for details. You may find
suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on
the Linux driver download page at www dot nvidia dot com

i have the kernel source and tree installed according to synaptic, its just the commands im pickeled with now, im not sure of the exact file i should be pointing the installer to, any ideas?

look closely at the output from
Code:
uname -a
mine is
Code:
Linux pisces 2.6.15-1-486 #2 Mon Mar 6 15:19:16 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
and then apt-get the kernel headers with
Code:
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.15-1-486
the suffix installation script for nvidia graphics drivers is
Code:
--x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/
which just goes after the .run bit of the NVIDIA command (with a space).

To be honest I wouldn't have though that was needed for NFORCE drivers so just stick the headers in first

glad it's starting to progress

still no sound?

check that the NFORCE module is actually being loaded with
Code:
lsmod | grep force
It should list out with nforce and then some digits (which aren't important here).

If that checks out then fire up kmix or alsamixer or pickyopurfavmixer and make sure that the levels aren't at zero and that mutes aren't on.

Even though you have a shiny new NFORCE module you still need either ALSA or OSS to translate all that lovely binary output into actual sound. Debian's default is alsa so it should be installed.
