Canon Powershot sd500 with gphoto2
 

I am using Ubuntu (5.1) and would like to get my Canon sd500 camera working with it. I have gphoto2 2.1.6 installed on my computer, but am not able to communicate with the camera using it.

Once it detects the IXUS 700 camera, it cannot still connect to it.

I could find a setting on the camera menu to change from normal mode to PTP mode.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

I'm not familiar with your camera, I have a Nikon. I had to change it to PTP mode to get it working with Gphoto2. At the time, I did some research, and it seemed PTP mode was the best supported way of communication.

During my experience in trying to get my Nikon 5000 working, I bought a inexpensive memory card to USB adapter. Any good camera store carries them. The memory is seen as a disk drive. You make an entry in fstab and mount it when necessary. I really like this approach. My 256 Mb card will hold up to 1000 images. You open up Konqueror as a file manager, and simply copy off the images you want.

I find I may take the camera out and shoot a few images, and want just those images. If I have the camera connected, I have to mark just those images. That I found slow and a pain.
