Canon F50 Printer~ Can it work?
 

I bought this Thursday at the Scottsdale Senior Citizen Center. I googled it
and have discovered that it doesn't work in Linux. Does anyone know of a work
around? I googled it and it seems that the S600 driver might work but since I
have no ink I can not verify this. I got no error when I tried to print so I
don't know what to think.
What do you think?

chances are slim. if it's worth the 20 or 30 bucks to get the ink to find out that might be the only way. many times when a printer is not working you won't get any gui errors, you won't get any output from the printer either. you could take a look at /var/log/cups/error_log, if you set it up w/cups, or maybe /var/log/messages to see if you've got any errors. hope that helps.

I have a Canon F50. Love the prints and it is a good color copier. It is cheap to run. However, I have NEVER been able to get it to work under Linux, hence my older computer stays mainly in Windows XP simply because of the printer (and a few games my son plays).

The F50 is is not recognized by any of the Linux drivers I have tried and the commercial drivers I found don't support it. Canon offered to give me a discount on a new Canon printer when I complained.

The Windows drivers are very problematic and won't let you share the printer over the network nor even between users (the first user to log in on XP "gets" the printer -- if you switch users, the 2nd user can't print!). The drivers sometimes don't recognize the printer and cause me to reboot.

From my experience with this, I would recommend an HP printer in the future.
