Cannot start X with ATi Radeon X300 on Slackware 10.1

I'm trying to get a Dell OptiPlex GX280 (P4 3.2/1GB RAM/160GB HD) to work with the video card in the subject. I managed to start X using the radeon driver included in X.org 6.8.2, but things were running a little slow... So I decided to install the binary driver from ATi.

Now X doesn't start, it's just a black screen with no mouse pointer and everything is frozen: Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc does nothing, Ctrl+Alt+Del makes one long beep and then nothing (?!); the only thing to do is to power the system off.

I see no errors in the X.org log, the only odd thing is a message about agpgart in the system bootup.

I'm running Slackware 10.1 upgraded to current, with kernel 2.4.29.

Here is the relevant info:

looks like you didnt change the xorg config to reflect the new driver, the ati website should have the correct settings to use, you may have broken the vga driver in installing the ati binary, all you should have to do it change the Driver ""

vibrokatana 07-14-2005 01:18 PM

on second thought try removing the first device line, it looks like xorg is confused by the two device entries and is trying to load 2 video card drivers on one, ati probably inserted the lines, and they probably mentioned something about deleting the lines in the readme
