cannot read from /dev/dsp but sound works fine otherwise

Hi, I use the onboard AC97 soundchip with my Fedora installation.

Sound works fine in KDE for the most part, playing sound works seemingly well, wether it's youtube videos, a movie with mplayer, or music with XMMS.

but when I try to read from /dev/dsp I get an error after a few seconds:

Code:
# cat /dev/dsp
cat: /dev/dsp: Input/output error
Application, that read from /dev/dsp or /dev/audio, cannot record any sound.

But when I activate the sound output in kmix for the microphone, I can hear the sound my microphone gets.

I googled quite a lot, and found several suggestions how to tackle this problem. I tried all of them, but nothing works.

A few weeks ago, however, I was able to read from /dev/dsp, I don't know what happened in the meantime...

please help.
