And if you're trying to play mp3s RH won't let you, so you need to go add the support for that. If oggs and whatnot won't play either, it's something else, though.

in RedHat 9.0 MP3 is not suported because of license reasons.
under
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp...at/9/xmms-mp3/
there is an rpm which enables MP3

;o)

I did install alsa with a nforce2 chipset and couldn't get anything but kde apps to spit out sound.After I disabled arts: sound and multimedia - soundsystem - start arts soundserver at startup unchecked everything worked fine.It was also suggested to get rid of autodetection for arts and set it to alsa - didn't try that so far.
Anyway:Your problem is probably missing .mp3 support if you just got trouble with mp3's.

you shouldn't need to actually disable arts, just make xmms use the arts output.

Didn't work for me - been there,tried it.
But ever sine I compiled gentoo with -athlon-xp -O2 things tend to be flaky.Although I don't know if the new mobo with the integrated IGP (will try with other card) or the power supply (it's only 200 W - getting a new one) or anything else is to blame.

you should load the rpms and install them with
rpm -Uvh rpm-name.rpm
U = update
v = verbose
h = hashtabels during install

after that you should be able to play mp3 on redhat 9
I tried it on 3 different systems and it worked fine.

:-)
