Cannot mount Toshiba MK3008GAL 1.8 " CE HDD (ATA-6 with ZIF connector)

- I have an Acer Aspire One AOA110 running lubuntu 11.10.
- A couple of years ago the 8gb SSD drive stopped working so I fitted a HDD from an ipod classic.
- The netbook has recently started overheating a few seconds after each boot, so I want to access that HDD from another PC
- I have bought a ZIF to USB adapter/enclosure like this one http://youtu.be/7vaMtXwqWXc
- When connected it appears in the file browser but opening the icon has no effect
- It appears as sdb in /dev but doesn't show up in fdisk -l
- Other CLI outputs as follows:

lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 13fd:1040 Initio Corporation

dmesg:

uname -r:

Any ideas how to mount it then?

At a guess, it's overloading the usb, which switches the port off. It wouldn't be the first time Toshiba used a different connector just to make sure you bought original spares. I distrust converters since I came across motherboards blown by them.
