Cannot mount/find USB external harddrive
 
I am running backtrack 2.0 kernel (2.6.18-rc5) (hd install) on a older averatec laptop and cannot figure out how to mount/access a ntfs external hardrive (bus powered- no external power supply) to copy files from my linux to my window install (seperate boxes... not dual booted). I am a complete newbie to linux... excellent w/ windows... enough that I can kinda understand the output of the "dmesg" and other commands given in tutitorials posts ect... but not enough to figure out what I have to do to fix my problem. This is what I have done so far...

1. Checked the physical layer... Yes it works on "windoze". Yes the power led lights up... Yes other devices work on that particular USB port.

2. Poked around in the dev, mnt, and proc folder to no avail...

3. Rebooted about 9,999,999.3 1/2 times...

4. Opened up FSTAB... and promptly STABBED my self in my eye with a rusty nail... (copy of my FSTAB)

6. Found a program called "USB View" and it shows my usb KVM Switch/Keyboard/Mouse (mouse/keyboard attached to KVM) but not any other devices...

Help!!! (Before I "practice" my chuck norris moves on my laptop!)

It looks like your USB drive is being detected, so you just need to mount it. First, find out where the drive is

fdisk -l
Note that's a lowercase "L". Most likely it will appear as something like /dev/sda or /dev/sdb, and depending on how you've partitioned it, there would be one or more partitions named /dev/sda1, etc. To mount it, you would

mount /dev/<partition> <mountpoint>
where <partition> is the partition (obviously) and <mountpoint> is the mount point, such as /mnt/usb. Note that the mount point must exist in order to mount something to it, so you might need to create it first.

mkdir <mountpoint>
For example, "mkdir /mnt/usb". Please see the man pages for mount and mkdir for more info.

Sorry that it took me so long to reply... been in and out of the hospital ect... for the past few days...

I got it... I just had to mount it using "mount /dev/sda5" now I just need to figure out how to mount it read/write instead of read only...

if your usb drive is ntfs, you will not be able to write to it from linux; make it fat32 instead, you can then use it in both os'.
