I know that there is a fingerprint reader; it worked under Windows before I scrubbed the DD and installed Linux. However, I cannot recognize the device from the above listing.
Also, how does one read the output from the device? Presumably it is a bitmap in some raw format.

Seems the device is USB ID 06cb:00bd as listed in yopur first post. See the thread above, apparently, it need firmware, and an update to libfprint to work.

No, that is your finger print reader. Read through the link I posted, that device is in bunch of Levono laptops. Do a search on the ID 06cb:00bd and it will take you to libfprint, among other things.
