Cannot get nv driver to work and the vesa driver is limited

My computer has been experiencing sporadic hangs/crashes. For more information see my LQ thread: http://tinyurl.com/2gwd4m

In an attempt to see if it is the nvidia driver, I un-installed it an am trying to use a substitute in the meantime.

The vesa driver is working, but it looks terrible on my LCD that has a native resolution of 1600x1200 (the vesa driver seems to have a limit of 1280x1024).

When I replace the driver with "nv", the DVI input is not enabled and the VGA output is completely corrupted (ctrl+alt+backspace brings me back to the terminal corrupted too).

How can I get a 1600x1200 with DVI support working on this nvidia e-GeForce 7300 GS card without using the NVidia drivers?

Why don't you try using the binary nvidia drivers? The latest version can be found here.

You'll need to have the kernel headers installed. IIRC, apt-get install linux-kernel-headers-`uname -r` is the command to install them.

Thanks for responding, but apparently you didn't read any of my post.

I need a driver that is not the nvidia driver. My whole point is to not run the nvidia driver as I am trying to make sure it isn't the cause of my computer hangs.
