Question Cannot get my printer or speakers working on my computer with linux.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400. It originally came with windows XP and my brother just installed linux. Now the speakers that came with the computer are not working. Even with them plugged in the computer says it cannot read it. Also my printer is a HP PSC 1510 All-in-One. It too is not being read and not working. My brother and I have tried everything we could think of. If anyone can help me with this situation I would greatly apprieciate it! Thank you

It's difficult to say from the what you have stated.

It would be a great help if we knew which Linux distribution your brother installed (Fedora 5, OpenSUSE 10.1, etc).

What tools provided with the distro have you used to try to resolve your problems? What error messages did you get?

The place to find some of the errors info is the file /var/log/messages. Open a console window, and run the command 'dmesg | less' to scroll through some messages. 'cat /var/log/messages | less' allows you to scroll through the messages file looking for error messages.

Any information you can provide on the software you have, things you have tried, and error messages received would be most helpful.

Humgbyrd,
Your HP PSC 1510 printer is a multifunction printer. I have installed this very printer on Linux. To get all the features to work you will need to make sure you have the latest HP HPLIP package installed. You can go to http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/ to get the HPLIP file. You will need many other files such as Sane to get the scanner part working. Make sure you have an available update repository available online to get the needed files.
Your sound, first go to www.alsa.org and read all about the ALSA sound system. I recommend that you use ALSA exclusively for all your sound. Make sure you run alsaconf from the command line to configure your sound system and then refer to alsa.org for any settings preferences.
Post back with your results.
Scott
