Unhappy Cannot boot from sata dvd drive to install os

Have bought new pc in kit form and assembled everything.

Problem is that the BIOS only detects the SATA HDD but not the SATA DVD drive which means I cannot install the OS.

Obviously this means I'll need to get an IDE dvdrom to perform the install.

However, I just wondered if anyone has any ideas before I start canibalising other machines for the IDE cable and drive... (??)

Help appreciated.

First thing I would do is check the BIOS vendors' website for a newer version of the BIOS, or information on how to configure the BIOS you now have.

I currently have the same problem and working on a solution for Linux. I got Windows XP to install off it, and damn it I will get Linux to as well. What is your motherboard, chipset type stuff? Is it a native SATA DVD drive or a converter on there with a SATA cable? Are you plugging it into a chipset SATA or a SATA controller?

Problem solved.

I was plugging the sata dvd drive into the wrong bank of sata connectors. Apparently the BIOS can only see one bank of SATA connectors. Strange ... but true nonetheless.

Many thanks to bigrigdriver and method9455.

One of the banks might be configured for RAID-only.
