Unhappy Cannot access Sony SDX-250V tape drive RH8

Hi All

Help me pleeease

I am reletivley new at configuring and using tape drives on RH8. I have an Initio SCSI card and a Sony SDX-250V tape drive.

At boot up RH8 appears to pick up the hardware, when Kudzu was run for the first time after the hardware was installed, it appearred to configure the card and tape drive correctly.

But I am unable to access the drive to do a backup.

I tried mt -t /dev/st0 status and all I get is "no such device or address"
The same with mt -t /dev/nst0 status

I copied this from the /var/logs/messages

"May 3 13:21:18 LJSERVER kernel: scsi1 : Initio INI-9X00U/UW SCSI device driver; Revision: 1.03g
May 3 13:21:18 LJSERVER kernel: Vendor: SONY Model: SDX-250V Rev: 0100
May 3 13:21:18 LJSERVER kernel: Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
May 3 13:21:25 LJSERVER kernel: scsi : 1 host left."

So I would think that this means that all is ok, but I cant find where the drive is mounted to.

Do I have to add something to the path" or mount the device somehow.

I am having no luck accessing the drive no matter what I try.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the output of the lsmod command. Do you see the module st loading? If not try the command:
modprobe st

Thanks michael

That got me on the right track

lsmod did not show the SCSI card properly, I did a modprobe initio and immediatly could access /dev/st0, and then managed to tar a backup directly to the tape.

You wouldn't believe how many threads I viewed to try and correct this. I'll have to go back and help some others who I think may have the same problem. Seems a bit strange though that both the card and tape were showing up in the "Hardware Browser" though.
