Post Cannot access external hard drive

Hi all, I recently bought a 1TB Seagate Expansion Portable HDD (model number: SRD00F1). It works fine on my Windows 7 laptop.

On my Linux desktop, however, I can read from the HDD, but I cannot delete files on it or write to it. When I try to copy a file to the HDD, I get the following error from Dolphin File Manager: "Access denied. Could not write to '/run/media/divan/device_name"

What I've tried so far, in chronological order, but with success:
1. chmod 777 /dev/sdb (I made sure the HDD WAS /dev/sdb by checking gparted)
2. formatting the drive on Windows 7 to ntfs.
3. formatting it on my Linux desktop(the same) to ext4.
4. formatting it to ntfs in my Linux desktop(the same).

Also, I did the same with another external hard drive(LG HXD5 500GB) and got exactly the same error.

My desktop's details are:
3.13.7-1-ARCH Linux running KDE Version 4.12.3

Just as a side note, the way my desktop is handling the HDD's seems suspiciously allot like it would read a ROM like a CD or DVD. Maybe that has some relevance, but it's pure speculation.

Thank you for reading!

drives are normally auto mounted as READ ONLY for non root users

this can be set in the /etc/fstab file

Quote:
chmod 777 /dev/sdb (I made sure the HDD WAS /dev/sdb by checking gparted)
it is NEVER!!!! a wise idea to run "chmod 777" on anything

formatting the drive on Windows 7 to ntfs.
the only way a linux OS can read and write to a Microsoft (patented) NTFS file system is if "NTFS-3g" is installed

Arch linux will auto mount a MICROSOFT NTFS formatted drive as "read ONLY "
-- by default--
