That looks like your hard disk controller. It's used to, er... control your hard disk. Block reads and writes to your disk are handled by the controller rather than the main CPU as happened when dinosaurs ruled the world. The controller is usually on the board attached to the disk these days. The bit in the computer does buffering and stuff. Most hard drives have bad blocks which exist due to the manufacturing process. The controller also handles this using a bad block file on the drive which is invisible to the host system. All error correction, track accessing, rewrites, vectoring of bad blocks, etc, is handled by the disk controller and is completely transparent to the host system and user. The system is presented with a perfect drive. (If you have a head crash because you dropped or banged your drive, THEN you'll notice it!) The system will slow down as the disk controller frantically tries to re-vector all the damaged bad blocks to a reserved area, usually two alternate cylinders. Once this alternate area is completely used up you're stuffed though you'd probably have had to replace the drive before that.

OK, that's probably far too much information so I'll stop now.

Play Bonny!
