Can only get sound as root

I am having problems using my sound card as a normal user under mandrake 9.1RC2. I have the sound module in, and if I start xmms as root from a terminal, I can play sounds, but I can't if I start it as the user. I put the user in the audio group, but when I start xmms as the normal user, it just freezes. Do I need to set some permissions or something?

try chmod 666 /dev/dsp and chmod 666 /dev/mi*

Ok, it just started working without me doing anything. Strange that it didn't work right after I changed the groups and relogged in.
