Can only get serial modem to connect at 9K

Hello,

I have recently installed SUSE Linux 10.0 on my computer and I use a (dial-up) modem connected to my serial port (ttyS0). When I configured KPPP for the modem I specified a speed of 40K, but my connection to WANADOO is only giving me 9K. I used to get a much faster connection, but since installing SUSE it is really slow. Am I missing something basic?
I've only been using Linux since January so I'm still a beginner.

Also, (I don't know if this is related) after I have connected I get a message saying that "Netapplet" crashed and I can't get it to run again.

I'd appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Alan.

There are many factors that can effect connection speed, however, since you say you were connecting at a higher rate previously then you can rule out your phone line.

If you were connecting to WanaDoo on another OS other then SUSE 10 and getting higher connect rates then perhaps your modem need some additional configuration. Not sure how fast your modem is or if it's V.90 but you may want to try researching some "Init" Strings for you modem and add them into KPPP's Modem config profile.

Other then that try a diff local access POP to your ISP and see if it may be on their end.

Good Luck

KC

That worked...Thanks

Hi,
Changing the Init strings worked. My connection is a lot faster now.
Thanks for your help,
Alan.
