I have a hard drive thats really not of use to me and would like to figure out how to maybe recover the data on it... can I use grub for that function.? I know its in a dos screen not quite sure if it's used for that function? Using Ubuntu Ver 9.

Are you using Ubuntu 9?? and you have a separate hard drive with data? Grub isn't going to help unless you have an operating system on it. Were you going to attach it to the computer on which you have Ubuntu installed? If there is data on the drive and you attach it to the computer with Ubuntu, you should be able to mount the partition filesystems on the drive and at least check to see if there is data on it.

I have a new system now using the latest version of Ubuntu 14.04. I am not sure if the external Hard drive can be recovered when its not working anymore, it could be Bricked as they say. I would like to talk to you over the phone if thats possible? I don't use this way of communicating with Ubuntu version 14.04 very much. I won't use Windows anymore haven't in years love the way Ubuntu works and am used to the way it works up to now. I really don't do any programming yet though. Is there any program on the Synaptic Package Manager that might do better for me.
