I am looking at a bad controller. In the case of an IDE drive, this usually means a mobo replacement. In the case of a SCSI drive, this usually means a new SCSI adapter.

Nonetheless, before committing, I would place the drive in a different machine and see if it works.

i have purchased a new drive and it works splendidly.

i do want to save the malfunctioning drive from the trash heap though.

have you tried freezing the drive. YOu may be able to get it temporarily working. Sometimes they lock up from heat. By freezing it you may unlock it. Just put it in an air tight bag and freeze it overnight. It worked on a couple of my drives. But it will probably only fix temporarily
