Can I play HD movies using an external HDD enclosure with USB 2.0?
I want to backup my Blu Ray movies to a SATA 3.0Gbs HDD and play them through an external HDD docking station using USB 2.0 like this one:
The computer to which this docking station will be attached has a video card with HDMI output and surround sound audio card. In summary I want to know if USB 2.0 is fast enough for HDMI or do I need to find a USB 3.0 docking station? I would prefer using USB 2.0 if possible for backward compatibility with computers lacking USB 3.0. Don't want to have to keep up with more than one docking station with different transfer rates if that is possible. Please don't post Google links. I don't like Google very much any more. I like LinuxQuestions and I like sharing information I learn in this manner with other Linux users who do not wish to Google all day when LinuxQuestions can serve up good answers. Thanks in advance.

I have used many usb drives in 2.0 for normal dvd movies. Depending on format and quality you may or may not get a blue-ray to work. I suspect it will since I have used mpeg2 to run 1 hour videos at 7G per file and it seems to be OK.

Blu-ray controller (1) is 4.5MB/sec. USB 2.0 max speed is about 40-50MB/sec.

Unless you've got a very slow USB 2.0 HDD, or do some odd things in the ripping process video should play from a USB 2.0 HDD just fine.
