Question Can Ext. HD w/ firewire boot Linux

I would like to install my various linux distros on an external hard drive and play with them at my convenience. Is this plausible? I've been told that not all ext. hd's are bootable. I would like to use a firewire interface. I would appreciate any suggestions on which External HD's are available that will perform in this manner.

Thanks!!

Well your BIOS would have to support booting from a firewire device.

Most modern motherboards can boot from a USB device. . but some still lack the feature. . .

Firewire is even less supported. (if at all)

Find out what type of motherboard you have. . . then check if it supports it.

It might only be able to boot off USB. . .
