Hello,
I am pretty new to Red Hat, well to Linux period. I am having an extremely hard time getting a modem to work with Red Hat 9.
Here is my situation:
Keep in mind I'm on dial-up, therefor I need a Dial-up modem.
I have recently obtained a copy of Red Hat 9. In an excited rush to get into the Linux way of computer life, I installed it without looking to all of the consequences. I have learned, to my dismay, that my modem is a Winmodem. After attempting all of the tricks I have read about, over the past week, I simply can't get Red Hat to pick it up.
I went to the Computer Shop here in town, and purchased a new Internal Modem. It had an Intel chipset, 536ep. On the enclosed cd-rom, it had all of the drivers, for windows, AND linux drivers, that were tested with many linux OS's inluding Red Hat. Well, right off the bat, Red Hat could not find the modem. I figured I needed to install the drivers. The Instructions they gave were cryptic at best, and I never could get the script to compile. (Like i said, I'm not Linux suave yet
.
Here is what I would like to know:
I would like to know what modem, internal or external, it doesnt matter to me, you linux pros out there would recommend for a noob. I do not want to do all of this, loggin in as root, opening the terminal, cd this, insmod that, I just don't know how to do it yet.
I would like a modem, that I can buy, and it is ready to go. I plug it up, Red Hat 9 automatically picks it up, and I can get online, without the hassle of installing drivers and the like, ya know a REAL modem.
I guess what I want is a modem without any software, that I can just use! I can go into more detail if you guys dont quite understand my problem. Please help, I have already been pinging back and forth between RH9 and Window XP because I cant get to the net with linux.
Thanks in advance, hopefully I can soon join you all, on my own linux system, this is the only thing holding me back.
